I've spent the last few weeks researching and planning a big adventure for 2016.
In the first two weeks of May, we'll be road tripping across the southern coast of South Africa. We'll start with a few days in Cape Town, then drive through a scenic region called the Garden Route, and end with a few days in Port Elizabeth. I'm jumping out of my skin with excitement.
Cape Town has been at the top of my hit list for years, so taking time to see other parts of the country is a sweet bonus. I'd never even heard of the Garden Route before researching this trip; some call it the most beautiful stretch of road in South Africa. Luckily we have time to extend that part of the trip into a week rather than attempt the unthinkable and squish all 300 km into one day.
Since May is an autumn month in the Southern Hemisphere, we'll be doing all this in the off-season. That's help keep the cost of everything down, with the added help from a great conversion rate between the Rand and the U.S. Dollar.
It'll be a bunch of firsts for me: first trip to the African continent, first swim in the Indian Ocean, and also first visit to the Middle East, if you count two long layovers in the Qatar airport.
